I have come to the conclusion

I have come to the conclusion that

cyberspeak

is an enjoyable language. It allows one to break the rules of grammar and punctuation without penalty. Language, especially English, has always been an organic substance. In other words, the diction, syntax and rules of any natural mode of communication, such as English, have always

morphed

and evolved as humans put input into it.

Strict, mechanistic rules in language are only formalized in order to ease communication among the elite. The important thing to remember is that certain individuals are naturally elected the right to challenge this order. They do so by being

creative

.

If we are going to fertilize this organic thing called English, then we have to be willing to see through to the real meaning of the shackles of formalization, and

see

that these strict rules are really a form of enslavement. Particularly what is enslaved is your

creative spirit

.

Of course, average ordinary casual speakers know instinctively that

language is organic. There are zillions of microcosms, families, sub-families, neighborhoods, clans, groups,

sub-cultures

, elite and scrubbers, all of which secretly defy convention.

When searching for a true

Published on July 29th, 2010no comments

When searching for a true rookie card, you want the first card that the player ever appeared on. Be careful of rookie reprints, which are sometimes nearly impossible to differentiate from the real thing. For example, Michael Jordan?s rookie card was reprinted years ago and it?s nearly impossible to tell a real MJ rookie card, which is worth thousands of dollars, from the reprint. If you?re considering investing a large amount of money in a card, do as much research as possible to make sure that you are getting the real deal. If feasible, have the card authenticated or buy one that?s already authenticated from a reputable source.

Limited edition items also increase in value due to the fact that there are only a certain number of these items available and they are not being mass produced. As a general rule, anything that is produced in limited quantities will always retain a better value than anything that was produced in larger quantities.

Norfolk gets new GM; coach still up in air

Staff report

The Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday named Julien BriseBois as the new general manager of the Norfolk Admirals, the NHL team’s top minor-league affiliate.

BriseBois, who also will serve as assistant GM of the Lightning, becomes the fifth general manager in AHL Admirals history – but the fourth in four seasons.

As for who will be coaching in Norfolk this season, that remains up in the air.

BriseBois was asked about the coaching situation in Norfolk in a conference call on Friday and at first seemed a bit confused. He said he had thought the Admirals had a coach: Jim Johnson. But he quickly back-tracked.

“I just took the job today. I still have to work with (Lighting officials) before we put together a staff in Norfolk,” BriseBois said, adding that he had no timeline for naming a coach.

“We’ve had a rough couple of years in Norfolk for our partners and our fans. I’ve been told we have good partners on the business side. We just need better players. Our mandate is to put together a strong development program for our prospects and … a winning and entertaining team for the fans in Norfolk.”

The Admirals have missed the AHL playoffs for three straight seasons, although they were in contention until the final weekend this past season.

BriseBois will report directly to Steve Yzerman, the GM in Tampa Bay, and assist him in player contracts, salary arbitration and transactions for the Lightning and Admirals

Cleaning house a decade late

Raise your hand if you want your child or grandchild taught by a poorly performing or under-performing teacher.

Just as I suspected: no hands.

So, why the brouhaha over recent news that 241 D.C. Public School teachers have been fired?

Those teachers were fired after receiving poor evaluations or failing to secure requisite licenses. Another 737 deemed “minimally effective” are next, if they don’t get their acts together. Conspiracy theorists, of which there are many in the nation’s capital, have posited that Chancellor Michelle Rhee and Mayor Adrian M. Fenty concocted the scheme for the terminations three years ago when she arrived.

Let’s hope so. That means they actually had a plan and now are busy implementing it

We’ve known for decades DCPS was infected with lousy or marginal instructors. Parents and education advocates were pleading for change as far back as 1989. That’s when the Federal City Council- sponsored Committee on Public Education surveyed the system, held a series of ward-based town hall meetings and issued its sweeping indictment of the DCPS. Among its many recommendations was the implementation of pay-for-performance as a method for enhancing the teaching corps. That didn’t happen. Consequently, during Superintendent Clifford Janey’s tenure, there still were hundreds of teachers who lacked the certifications that demonstrate subject- matter expertise. Instead of being fired, they simply were put on probation.

Rhee and Fenty are not the creators of the city’s abysmal public education system. They are the people finally doing something about it.

“How much longer do the children of Washington, D.C. have to be subjected to poor teachers,” Rhee asked me rhetorically during an interview, after I mentioned critics of her actions. Those critics include the Washington Teacher’s Union, which has promised to fight the terminations.

The WTU and others in the city have attempted to ensnare Rhee in politics or process: Did she talk with 100 people? Say please ..
